Does not the whole of life's purpose point to a realization of Unity in Diversity: seeing all things as one in One, instead of separately and in detail? There are always the pairs of opposites in separative considerations, and these are effects. The One Reality sees both as reflections, a light and dark; if not seen they do not exist." R C FP 55 "We should all constantly remember that if we believe in the Masters we should at least try to imitate them in the charity They show for our weaknesses and faults. In no other way can we hope to reach Their high estate, for by beginning thus we set up a tendency which will one day perhaps bring us near to Their development; by not beginning we put off the day for ever." WQJ "Heart Doctrine" p. 90 [ WQJ Articles II p. 361 ] "To abstain from condemning others is a course to be continually striven for; it is vital. No two really act from the same basis of perception; how, then can anyone judge ? It should be granted that each one is trying to do his best -- the best that he knows. His knowledge may be small, but if he strives to do the best he knows, his knowledge increases." R C FP 52 "The fact that the person whom you condemn, or oppose, or judge seems now in this life to deserve it for his acts in this life, does not alter the other fact that his nature will react against you when the time comes. The reaction is a law not subject to nor altered by any sentiment on your part. He may have truly offended you and even hurt you and done that which in the eye of man is blameworthy; but all this does not have anything to do with the dynamic fact that if you arouse his enmity by your condemnation or judgment there will be a reaction on you and consequently on the whole of Society in any country when the reaction takes place." WQJ "Heart Doctrine" 87 [ WQJ Articles II p. 358-9 ] "The true path to divine wisdom is in performing our duty unselfishly in the station in which we are placed, for thereby convert lower nature into higher, following Dharma--our whole duty." The free-internet fever is catching on, at least in the Europe. What next? Giving away a computer too to surf? The social impact of the current trend is going to be very far reaching and is going to shake some of the membership/spiritual organizations. It would be interesting to see where all this will help dissemination of theosophy and how it is going to affect the theosophical organization and its leadership have believed and operated in the hierarchical communication model. It looks like the Powers Be seem to think otherwise as seen by the sudden emergence of Internet and its impact on communication in the society. Keep tuned. Next millenium is going to be very exciting. mkr ================== Europe's ISPs: How free? Free Web access in Europe is booming, but call charges weigh heavily "The dramatic rise of "free" Internet services across Europe over the last six months is now raising a critical question: How long will it take before free access becomes completely free? Following the lead of Britain's Freeserve, a host of telephone companies, retailers and banks have launched no-subscription-fee online services of their own -- in Spain, France and Germany as well as in the United Kingdom. But as their numbers increase and newcomers vie to attract and keep users, some are sure to eliminate the cost of "free" access - the local phone charges users pay for the time they dial into the Internet. "We believe by the end of this year you will see a completely free-to-air provider in the UK," said Nick Jones, an analyst at Jupiter Communications Inc., an Internet market researcher. Users want free Web access "There will be some ambitious retailer or network operator that packages some services so that access is free," he said. But getting that first provider to go "free-to-air" may take more time than people expect. The free providers first have to build up enough additional revenue from advertising and electronic commerce to cover the phone charges. Service providers resist There is also a great deal of resistance from some of the major Internet service providers (ISPs). AOL Europe, a venture of America Online (AOL) and German media giant Bertelsmann, plans to start a free service of its own, but sees it more as a fad than a lasting business model. Deutsche Telekom (FDTE), whose T-Online unit is the largest access provider in Europe, is opposed to the free-to-air concept. All the free providers offer cut-rate Internet access in hopes of ringing up other streams of revenue. Freeserve is trying to become a major portal -- a high-traffic Web page that makes money from online advertisements and takes a cut of any e-commerce it brings to e-retailers connected to its site. Telefonica, the Spanish phone company, wants its Teleline service to boost traffic for its phone network. Dell Computer (DELL), which has launched free services in Britain and Germany and plans to go to France and other countries, believes DellNet will drive sales of its PCs. But with so many providers trying to build up a loyal customer base, some free providers will eventually resort to picking up their customers' phone tabs as part of the deal, said Ian McDonald, an analyst at Charterhouse Securities Ltd. "It's not inconceivable to imagine some Internet service providers even paying customers to use their service," said McDonald, who follows Freeserve's parent Dixons Group (DXNS), an electronics retailer. No charge to look around a store Dixons, he added, is more interested in getting revenue from selling products online than getting the cost of running a store -- you don't charge people to come in and look around," McDonald said. The rise of free services has been hailed by Internet watchers across Europe because they are helping get more people online. Within months of its September 1998 launch, Freeserve had one million users registered to use its service. Scores of others - including retail rival Tesco (TSCO), Barclays Bank (BARC), and broadcaster BSkyB (BSY) - have joined the fray. The switch to really free Internet access could put Europe on the way toward narrowing the gap with the United States in the online boom. Many Americans spend 50 hours or more a month surfing and shopping online because they get unlimited local phone access for a flat, monthly fee. High charges discourage use Europe's system of per-minute charges discourages heavy use. In Germany, 30 hours of online time can cost 150 marks ($78.50) or more. And every additional minute ups the cost. "If you take away the meter, usage goes way up," Jones said. At least one British provider, X-Stream Technologies Inc., already offers unlimited, totally free surfing - but only on selected weekends. E-mail messages alert X-Stream users a few days before it activates a toll-free 0800 number. X-Stream likes the idea of going totally free, but has no plans to do so without competitors pushing it. "We are already the freest service. Why should we make it even freer?" said marketing director Paul Shalet. None of the free services can yet afford to go all-free all the time, and even the biggest have to work to get there. Freeserve is U.K.'s biggest Freeserve has already passed AOL Europe as the largest provider in Britain. But because of its amorphous customer base, it may have a hard time generating the advertising revenue to support a free-to-air offer. Without a subscription fee tying customers to Freeserve, some could sign up and quickly switch to another provider, or never use Freeserve at all. AOL Europe thinks advertisers will prefer hard demographics that come from a subscription-based service that knows the names, addresses and credit card numbers of who is online. The best chance for truly free Internet use may come from phone companies or cable TV companies that can offer access as a part of another service. Germany's free service Net users in Kiel, Germany, for example, can surf all day and all night with no extra charges as long as they switch their basic phone service from Deutsche Telekom to a local phone company owned by Mobilcom (FMOB). Mobilcom wants to make the same offer in other cities where it doesn't have local exchanges, but must rent phone lines from Deutsche Telekom to do so, and that is bogged down in months of negotiations and technical work. That leaves Deutsche Telekom and its T-Online as the provider for most Germans. Furthermore, the former monopoly has no interest in dropping T-Online's pay-as-you-surf system for a flat rate or a free model. "The user must always pay," said Chief Financial Officer Joachim Kroeske. "Access is a service that has a value and you must pay for that." From ???@??? Dallas TenBroeck" Subject: RE: Theos-World theosophy: Cycles of Religion == a common Source of Wisdom July 6th 1999 Dear Friend: I believe you are correct when you speak of the emergence of one religion out of another as a cyclic spiral. There is always similarity and not identity. Consider that there is always at the base of each religion a philosophy of life. This philosophy, if true, is not going to vary in its essentials. Consequently, what we witness in the past are the spirals in time of a great set of universally diffused IDEAS and their philosophy -- that always resurfaces and also may seem to be "new" in "its" time. Whereas it is quite old. If we wish to identify some of them we could say: 1. There is a great and unknown source of all. 2. Since we all share in that single origin we are all BROTHERS. Not only among humans, but also with everything else in Nature. 3. Nature and God are names given to the actuality of our lives in the present. 4. A great law of universal fairness, harmony, balance and justice works at the same rate and pace for everyone, and for all living things. 5. Every being is an immortal at its core, which is "spark" or a "ray" of SPIRIT/MATTER. From the "atom" to the Galaxy, we are all united. 6. In mankind we see the emanation of the power of the Mind. it is conjoined to the faculty of instinct, of feeling, of desire and need. But the mind having a direct connection with the ONE SOURCE, is able to distinguish between the essential and fair, and the non-essential and selfish. 7. this makes for the difference between "Good, and Evil." Good is to cooperate with Nature (God's) Law. Evil is to distort or pervert them. Nature in her great sensitivity takes note of our motive -- a combination of our thought and feeling. This beings to us Karma. Karma is the response from Nature to assist us, always. If we have chosen well or wrongly, it presents us eventually with the result of our choices. It is always fair, just and therefore merciful to all. It assists us to redress wrongs, and to benefit from the good that we do. 8. The whole of Nature is found to be progressive. Wisdom of the Mind is the result of a closer study of our own faculties and of the great Laws that are already active in Nature. Science, for instance, is the intent and careful study of Nature's workings in all departments of nature. Nature HAS ALREADY INSTALLED EVERYTHING IN PLACE FOR OUR PROGRESS. We share this marvelous advantage with every other being in the World and the Universe. 10. The final result of Evolution is to become a WISE HUMAN BEING. We have always had them among us, when we think of the Christs, the Buddhas, The Rishis, the Prophets, and the Sages of all countries and all times. They form a great brotherhood. They are the Great Servants of Mankind. They seek to get us to study our own selves, how we think, how we feel, how best to act. They always say that we have to push ourselves forward to ever learn more from the "Book of Life" that is open before us. WE are the "Eternal Pilgrims." The great Souls, the Mahatmas, Buddhas, Prophets, Christs, Rishis, etc. whose record of acting in a superior manner and whose words resound as "truth", can be seen to form one great body of WISE MEN. They do not die, as Intelligences, but always act from time to time as the teachers of men. They are a great brotherhood. [ see ISIS UNVEILED, Vol. 2, pp. 98 - 103 ] It takes some time for a religion to grow up around a philosophical reform, and thus, coating it with the "Letter of the Law," it ends in stifling and choking it. Forcing one aspect of the "Truth" on others, whether it be words or observances (rites), is useless. Each one has to have the freedom to make decisions and choose those criteria for action on their own. No one can learn for another. Each has to do the learning and the progressing themselves. People have to realize that the TRUTH is inside themselves -- it is in all our many hearts. So we have to express it by thinking and acting as though we were brothers to everything else. If we set up a barrier of differences, we will lose the fine edge of sensitivity that perceives in another's religion or philosophy the same basic truths we were taught in ours. They are not as basis mutually exclusive, but reach out at that time and place to embrace the rest and their earlier sources. That is one thing to consider. Another is the cycle of reincarnation. Mme. Blavatsky in the KEY TO THEOSOPHY says that this runs between 10 and 15 centuries on the average. Similar kinds of civilizations return, similar knowledge, architecture, skills, values, and also the lack of these. This is due to the return of certain average kind of Egos (minds or souls ). The Soul-mind is an "Immortal Pilgrim." It uses body after body, and one might say that each incarnation is like a new day in "schools." The SCHOOL OF LIFE, which for us is our Earth. Thus everything in theosophical philosophy is viewed as alive, constantly learning, ceaselessly reincarnating under the great law of Karma that ever urges to evolve into more perfect stages of knowledge and wisdom. It states that this is a moral, or ethical universe and the practice of benevolence, compassion and brotherhood enables us to comply with this situation. We always have opportunities to assist and help our fellow man and woman. If we neglect those, we are the ones who delay our own advance. If we harm anyone, for whatever reason, we ask the great and impartial law of Karma to take note; and, in its always educative mode, it gives us a situation later on, in which we are the recipients of the force of our motive in action. This can happen immediately, or after some days, weeks, or years -- perhaps even in a future life-time. All our Karma is always mixed in with that of others, so we have the karma of a family, a race, a religion, or a Nation. Nothing escapes the scope of Karmic action. This is because everything is alive and emanates at its source from the same "god-head" [ the ONE, UNKNOWN SPIRITUAL SOURCE" ]that we all do. I hope this will be found useful and helpful. And do ask more questions. Internet is oneof the tools which is going to help in this view. >From a realistic view, the copyright issue is going to come up from time to time. Many times people would try to use copyright "rights" infringement as a big stick tool to silence free speech -- suppress dissemination of information that one may consider either does not reflect well on the individual/organization(s) with which one is associated/involved or one may consider/perceive as an occult "secret". It happened to me (some time ago) when a very well known T/thesophist tried to claim infringement on a non literary document which was sent to many others. This person also claimed that contents of un-published material cannot even be disclosed. That was when I got interested in copyright issues and found out that (a) there is a fair use doctrine and (b) US law explicitly permitting dissemination of the contents of unpublished material. Also coincidentally one of the main architects of (b) was Illinois Senator Simon who was a newspaper man and who was fullly aware of its implication of its effect on the rights of publishers and reporters. I will not be surprised if again attempts are made by individuals on matters we deal with on the maillists to mislead the ignorant in an attempt to silence dissemination of information. Here is a post which is one of the best I have seen in recent years. It reviews the global situation regarding among other things - copyright. As for those in the US, I found the following to be important if one is ever challenged of copyright infringement. " By contrast the operative concept in the United States is 'fair use' which, in the simplest terms, means: Nonprofit use is fair use." I am sure the info may be useful to some. mkr =============================================== > Date: Fri, 9 Jul 1999 19:02:39 -0600 > Sender: owner-cni-copyright@cni.org > From: "Harry Hillman Chartrand" > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: Copyright & The New World Economic Order COPYRIGHT AND THE NEW WORLD ECONOMIC ORDER Much is made in the popular press of the emerging global knowledge-based economy. But what is the foundation upon which it is to be built? Copyright, in my opinion, is one of the four cornerstones of this emerging new world economic order. The others are: patents, registered industrial designs and trademarks. Collectively, these constitute the legal foundation for the industrial organization of the emerging global knowledge-based economy. Copyright (the subject of this note) varies significantly within the world community of nations. In effect, copyright is a distinct cultural artifact defining the rights and privileges of a specific country's artists, authors, creators and copyright proprietors. Even the term 'copyright' is specific to the English-speaking world. In Civil Code countries (that is most of the non-English-speaking world including Japan but excepting bilingual Canada where the Civil Code applies only in French-speaking Quebec and the multilingual, but former British colonial possessions, the Republics of South Africa and India), the appropriate legal term is droit d'auteur or 'author's rights'. There are significant differences between the Anglo-American Common Law and European Civil Code traditions of copyright vs. author's rights. Such differences are explicit in the provisions and commentary of the 1976 UNESCO/WIPO Tunis Model Law on Copyright for Developing Countries which "allow for the Anglo-Saxon or the Rome legal approach..." Under the Civil Code, all moral rights and some economic rights are granted exclusively to flesh and blood individuals, or so-called 'natural persons'. Such creator's rights, to quote the Tunis Model Law, are: "perpetual, inalienable and imprescriptible". Furthermore, most "may not be transferred" to another individual (except as an heir) nor to a corporation. This last point -- non-transferability to a corporation - highlights an elemental difference between Common Law and Civil Code traditions, i.e. the Common Law 'fiction' that a corporation has the same rights as a 'natural person'. This has led to ongoing disagreement between, among others, the United States and the European Union about extending to American corporations the same Civil Code rights granted exclusively to individual creators. Even within the Anglo-American tradition, however, there are significant differences. Consider the generic treatment of exemptions from copyright infringement. In Canada, for example, the operative concept is 'fair dealing' which, in essence, means: Everything is an infringement unless specifically and clearly stated in the law. By contrast the operative concept in the United States is 'fair use' which, in the simplest terms, means: Nonprofit use is fair use. In Canada we are now at the point that a library is required to assure itself that a patron is engaged in bona fide 'research and private study' before making any copies available to him or her. The Governor-in-Council, i.e. the Government in the name of Her Majesty, is authorized by the Act to establish, by regulation, what steps must be taken by a library to obtain this assurance. This is required to obtain a 'fair dealing' exception from copyright infringement! Similarly, under the Canadian Copyright Act the only thing a teacher can do in the classroom that does not constitute infringement is to hand write information on an erasable surface. It is, accordingly, with great concern that I see, in the recent passage of the Millennium Digital Copyright Act by the US Congress, 'fair dealing' slipping into American copyright. Differences within the First World over intellectual property rights, however, pale in comparison with other parts of the global village. In the so-called Second World which emerged out of Communist Revolutions in twentieth century Russia, China, Cuba, etc., all "means of production" were the property of the State. With respect to intellectual property, moral rights of the creator were recognized but economic rights were limited to a onetime cash award with all subsequent rights and rewards reverting to the State. In the developing or Third World (or the South) there are historically varied traditions governing copyright. Early Islamic jurists, for example, recognized a creator's rights or copyright and offered protection against piracy. However, traditional Islamic law treats infringement as a breach of ethics, not as a criminal act of theft for which amputation of the right hand is mandated. Rather, punishment takes the form of defamation of the infringer and the casting of shame on his tribe. Only in recent years have formal copyright statutes been adopted in many Islamic countries, e.g. Saudi Arabia 1989. In much of the Third World, however, a different tradition exists which recognizes 'collective' or 'communal' or 'folkloric' copyright. This contrasts with the Western individual-based concept of intellectual property rights. Folkloric copyright recognizes rights to all kinds of knowledge, ideas and innovations produced in what can be called 'the intellectual commons', e.g. in villages among farmers, in forests among tribal peoples, and even in universities among academics. Such rights are not limited to the lifetime of an individual but rather exist in perpetuity with a specific group or an entire people. In 1984, UNESCO produced a Draft Treaty for the Protection of Expressions of Folklore against Illicit Exploitation and Other Prejudicial Action. It is not yet in force. In the Fourth World of 'aboriginal', 'indigenous' or 'native' peoples, intellectual property rights are, like in much of the Third World, rooted in a concept of collective or communal intellectual property existing in perpetuity, i.e. not limited to the life of an individual creator plus some arbitrary number of years after his or her death. To tribal peoples, a song, story or icon does not belong to an individual but to the collective. Rights are often exercised by only one individual in each generation, often through matrilineal descent. Unlike the Third World, aboriginal nations do not constitute 'States'. They therefore seldom participate on the international stage. Beyond the 1984 draft treaty on folkloric copyright, UNESCO passed a Recommendation on Safeguarding Traditional Cultures and Folklore in 1989. Another instrument was drafted by indigenous peoples themselves in 1994: the International Covenant on the Rights of Indigenous Nations. This 'pseudo' covenant articulates a distinctive Fourth World approach to intellectual property rights. To date, however, 'folkloric' nor 'aboriginal heritage rights' have no standing in the courts of the world. Differences in the 'spirit' of copyright law in the different neighbourhoods of the global village are increasingly important in an emerging global 'knowledge-based' economy. It is in the nature of a global economy that national laws governing trade in goods and services are increasingly subject to 'harmonization' for purposes of 'free' trade. For example, a common definition of a subsidy for purposes of the World Trade Organization is under development. All things being equal, this definition will eventually be agreed upon and implemented. This will inevitably inhibit the ability of national governments to develop and apply different and distinctive economic policies, rules and regulations favouring their own nationals - natural and corporate. Copyright, however, since the Berne Convention of 1886, is subject to a milder constraint: 'national treatment'. This means a nation extends to foreigners the same rights and privileges that it grants to its own citizens - both natural and legal, i.e. corporations. Such rights need not be the same. Rather, the same rights must be extended to citizen and foreigner alike within any Member State. Thus the rights of a Canadian artist in Canada are not the same as those of an American artist in the United States but the rights of a Canadian artist in the United States are the same as a resident American artist. In addition, Civil Code countries tend to recognize rights like "droit de suite" or 'rights of following sales' ensuring that visual and literary artist receive a percent of any subsequent sale of their works. Beyond the narrow definition of copyright (or author's rights) other related matters lay lurking waiting to emerge into the full light of a new millennium. In my recent compilation of 43 copyright related multilateral agreements, conventions, covenants and treaties, two deal with the trafficking or circulation of obscene materials -- a hot subject on the Web today. Others deal with: the 'Status of the Artist'; integrated circuits; satellites; broadcasts from outside a nation's frontiers, sound and visual recording; and many more subjects. In addition some countries are already taking steps to use copyright as an economic development incentive. The Republic of Eire (Ireland], for example, exempts copyright income earned by individuals from income tax. One can expect that new and ingenious fiscal and tax policies will be adopted by various countries in an attempt to generate the 'creativity haven' of the 21st century. Dallas TenBroeck" Subject: FW: [bn-study] RE Study on the Adepts, and Beings responsible for Evolutionary Plan and law July 13th 1999 From: Dallas dalval@nwc.net H P B and the MASTERS ============== Students have often speculated on the nature of H.P.Blavatsky.. Apart from that, what was her "mission ?" Why did she reveal the presence of the great Adepts whom she named Masters of Wisdom ? Why does she speak of a "College" of Adepts ? Can any human gain admission to such a "college?" And, when one has "graduated" from the "school" of Earth, what remains to be done? What functions can be available ? In describing her work and her writing she called herself a "scribe," a writer, working under dictation. Of herself and her wide travels and many tests and trials, she claimed to have only brought to the work that she so devotedly performed, a "string" wherewith to bind the nosegay of great truths together. One needs only survey the Table of Contents of ISIS UNVEILED and THE SECRET DOCTRINE, or look through a list of the titles of her many Articles to realise the panorama and the depth of her knowledge, and of the what Great Nature for whom the "Masters" work, had in the way of a curriculum and future for "graduates." "We servilely copy Nature," they once wrote. Writing in the SECRET DOCTRINE (I p. 67) she says: "...the Secret Doctrine teaches history..." If we were to consider that alone as a basis for viewing her work, we would find that the work of the great Adepts and their disciples down the ages (SD I 272-3) has been of two kinds. First to preserve a record of the events, facts, and laws that are in Nature, and second, to provide this information to those who qualify for its use. In doing this the Adepts responsible for this teaching have used the language of the time and people they came to. In ISIS UNVEILED and the SECRET DOCTRINE, the Adept authors have brought before us two kinds of records. First, the archaic, as represented by the "Stanzas of Dzyan (wisdom)." And second, such fragments of ancient literature, religious and philosophical as have evaded destruction, and have been lodged in our libraries, archives and museums as artifacts. And there may be more to be found, hints HPB in several places. She also states that the Adept College has secret libraries in which can be found all records in their original language of all that has been left in the past relating to the Wisdom Religion. The Secret Doctrine embodies information under the headings of Cosmogenesis (the rebirth of the Universe and of our World), and, Anthropogenesis (the progression of humanity from its spiritual, original prototype down into the gross physical matter of our present bodies--from an IDEAL THOUGHT, down into animated flesh and blood). The translation into modern language of these ancient statements is not always the original and complete meaning of myth, lore and intent, because there is always a wide difference between the literal meaning of words used (the EYE Doctrine), and the spiritual meaning (the HEART Doctrine). Students of the literal (of "head learning"), dispute over words. Students of the "heart doctrine" seek for the implications that lie behind the words used to describe ancient allegories and illustrations that are offered. In HPB's writings we perceive the attempt to restore original meaning and intent to us of the "Heart Doctrine" of the Perennial Philosophy, the WISDOM RELIGION. It is but natural that antiquarians will dispute these statements, as they are trained to rely on the decisions made by their predecessors (who now teach them) and who have been deeply influenced by current religious views and more recent "scientific" hypotheses. The work of the Adepts has always been to preserve and illustrate the existing Laws of Nature. This is named Karma in general. In this study we can look at evidence presented to us of the existence of the Wise. "The opened eye of the Dangma" (SD I 27, #8) shows that even during a Great Pralaya there are Those who are not involved in (subject to) that general "sleep" but are conscious and "awake." Next comes manifestation which at its dawn demands the presence of the "Builders," the "cosmocratores." Called the "luminous sons of the Manvantaric Dawn" (SD I 28, #1) they precede the "Seven Sons" (# 5) whose duty it is to guide the re-creation of the Universe. A further differentiation is mentioned (SD I 19, #4) "seven inside, seven outside." Of these (SD I 29, # 7) states: "Oeaohoo, the Younger" ...shines forth as the son...the blazing Divine Dragon of Wisdom; the One is Four, and Four takes to itself Three, and the Union produces the Sapta [seven], in whom are the seven which become the Tridasa (or the hosts and the multitudes)...He shuts out the above and leaves the below to be seen as the great illusion." If we turn to SD I 207-8 we will find that HPB gives us more detail concerning this "wondrous Being, called the "Initiator," and after him a group of semi-divine and semi-human beings...they are those in whom are said to have incarnated the highest Dhyanis [wise], "Munis and Rishis from previous Manvantaras"--to form the nursery for future human adepts, on this earth and during the present cycle...it is he again who holds spiritual sway over the initiated Adepts throughout the whole world...the "nameless One" who has so many names, and yet whose names and whose very nature are unknown. He is the "Initiator," called THE GREAT SACRIFICE." For sitting at the threshold of LIGHT, he looks into it from within the circle of Darkness, which he will not cross; nor will he quit his post...because the lonely, sore-footed pilgrims on their way back to their home are never sure to the last moment of not losing their way in this limitless desert of illusion and matter called Earth...in short, he has sacrificed himself for the sake of mankind, though but few of the Elect may profit by the GREAT SACRIFICE." HPB continues: "It is under the direct silent guidance of this MAHA--(great)--GURU that all the other less divine Teachers and instructors of mankind became, from the first awakening of human consciousness, the guides of early Humanity. It is through these "sons of God" that infant humanity got its notion of all the arts and sciences...and it is they who have laid the first foundation-stone of those ancient civilizations that puzzle so sorely our modern generations of students and scholars." (SD I 207-8) A statement is made that the Masters are not Eastern nor Western, but universal. To this HPB has added: "And whoever therefore wants to see the real MAHATMA, must use his intellectual sight. He must so elevate his Manas that its perception will be clear...His vision will then be bright and he will see the MAHATMAS wherever he may be, for, being merged into the sixth [Buddhi] and seventh [Atma] principles, which are ubiquitous and omnipresent, the MAHATMAS may be said to be everywhere." HPB Articles, I, p. 294 For this reason we can understand Mr. Judge writing about HPB: "I think that the way for all western theosophists is through H.P.B. I mean that as she is the T.S. incarnate--its mother and guardian, its creator--the Karmic laws would naturally provide that all who drew this life through her belonged to her, and if they denied her, they need not hope to reach [Masters], for how can they deny her who gave this doctrine to the western world? They share her Karma to little purpose if they think they can get round this identification and benefit, and [Masters] want no better proof that a man does not comprehend their philosophy. This would, of course, bar him from [Masters] by natural laws (of growth)...[those] who undervalue her gift and her creation, have not imbibed the teaching and cannot assimilate its benefits. She must be understood as being what she is to the T.S., or Karma...is not understood, nor the first laws of occultism." WQJ -- Letters, p. 110 "[ About H. P. B.] Those who cannot understand her had best not try to explain her...she knew...that high and wise servants of the Lodge have remained with the West since many centuries for the purpose of helping it on its mission and destiny. That work it would be well for members of the Theosophical Movement to continue without deviating, without excitement, without running to extremes...the truth of the soul's life is in no special quarter of the compass..." Letters, p. 76 Speaking of the Adepts and the great Teachers of Mankind, Judge further wrote: "...there are certain persons on this earth, living and working as ordinary human beings and members of society, whose informing divine part is so immeasurably high in development that they as such high beings have a definite status and function in the "supersensuous regions."...she herself was such a case, and that "H P B" whether hourly in the day or at night when all around was still, had a "status and function" in other spheres where she consciously carried on the work of that high station, whatever it was...[She wrote in one place] " I am conscious day and night, and have much to do and to endure in both these existences from which you, being half-conscious, are happily saved." WQJ, Articles I, p. 616 In conclusion we might observe that the Theosophical Movement has grown most in consequence of the effort of those who are devoted to an ideal, inspired by enthusiasm, and are filled with a lasting gratitude to H.P.Blavatsky. Their ideal is the service of Humanity, the ultimate potential perfectibility of man as exemplified by the Masters and Adepts of all ages, including the present. Implicit in a consideration of the advancement which each human can achieve, are a few statements which illustrate the nature of the effort and the "Path." "The real object to be kept in view is to so open up or make porous the lower nature that the spiritual nature may shine through it and become the guide and the ruler...it is the real man, who is the HIGHER SELF--being the spark of the Divine...--overshadows the visible being, which has the possibility of becoming united to that spark. Thus it is said that the higher Spirit is not in the man, but above him...The object of the student is to let the light of that spirit shine through the lower covering...all selfishness must be eliminated from the lower nature before its divine state can be reached...When systematically trained in accordance with the aforesaid system and law, men attain to clear insight into the immaterial, spiritual world, and their interior faculties apprehend truth as immediately and readily as physical faculties grasp the things of sense, or mental faculties those of reason..."They are able to look directly upon ideas." Epitome, pp. 13-14 Since the MAHATMA is an advanced occultist, who has so far controlled his lower "self" as to hold it more or less in complete subjection to the Cosmic impulse, it is in the nature of things impossible for him to act in any other but an unselfish manner. No sooner does he allow his "personal self" to assert itself, than he ceases to be a MAHATMA. The law of Cosmic evolution is ever operating to achieve its purpose of ultimate unity and to carry the phenomenal into the noumenal plane, and the MAHATMAS, being en rapport with it, are assisting that purpose they alone have got to the basic knowledge which can determine the right course and exercise proper discrimination. And for us it will be evident that, as soon as the least feeling of selfishness tries to assert itself, the vision of the spiritual sense, which is the only perception of the MAHATMA, becomes clouded and we loose the "power" which abstract "knowledge" alone can confer. Hence the vigilant watch of the "will" we have constantly to exercise to prevent our lower nature from coming up to the surface. In a letter the Mahatma observed: "A perfect man is not made to order but is a product of evolution. Wisdom is not a matter of book-learning but of growth. General rules for conduct can be given, but to apply them properly, the power of discrimination is necessary...A virtue, practiced without moderation, becomes a crime. To know how to find the point of equilibrium is the great secret of the Adept, that cannot be told but must be learned by experience, when sagacity and goodness will be united in wisdom." "The whole individuality is centred in the three middle Principles or third (MANAS), and fifth (ASTRAL BODY) principles. During earthly life it is all in the fourth (KAMA-MANAS), the center of energy, volition--will...the individuality survives...to run its seven-fold and upward course [it] has to assimilate to itself the eternal-life power residing but in the seventh (ATMA), and then blend the three (4th, 5th & 7th) into one--the 6th (BUDDHI). Those who succeed in doing so become Buddhas, Dhyan Chohans, etc... The chief object of our struggle and initiations is to achieve this union while yet on this earth." M L , p. 77-8 From ???@??? Copyright lawsuits are outrageously expensive, as are all actions in federal court. And people, including many lawyers I know think "fair use" means they can copy whatever they want any time they want and nothing will happen. I find IP law is dominated by large firms and for the average person in the U.S. copyright law provides only illusory protection at best. Not many can afford the $250,000 the typical IP lawsuit costs. Copyright law is about as "anti-average person" as it can be. Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 0000 Date: Mon, 26 Jul 1999 07:58:17 -0500 From: M K Ramadoss Subject: Falun Dafa/Falun Gong To me, the emergence of interest in Falun Dafa or Falun Gong is very interesting. While large number of Chinese in China belong to the group, there appears to be a widespread interest in the USA as well. As a curious observer of the New Age, I visited a website of the group in Atlanta. In the website it states, left "Falun Xiulian Dafa, a cultivation way of high level in the Buddhas' School, is founded by Mr. Li Hongzhi, Great Master of Falun Buddha Law. "By assimilating to the supreme cosmic quality---- Zhen-Shan-Ren (Truth, Compassion and Forbearance) as its foundation, it is guided by the supreme quality of the cosmos; therefore what we cultivate is a great law and a great way." Works by Master Li Hongzhi on expounding Falun Buddha Law, " Who can argue with any movement whose objective is Truth, Compassion and Forberance. Another aspect that is interesting is the way they claim everything they have to offer is free. In the modern day and age, when collecting fee, forced "love offering", suggested donation, donation for this or that targeted objective, as well as the traditional passing the plate and myriads of other techniques of making attendees pay ( I am not arguing about the 1001 reasons why money is needed and need to be collected), this group seems to be offering their classes free. The website states: " We offer free Falun Gong classes and workshops. No charge. No donations. No obligations. For schedules and locations, click here. We also offer free classes at your location. You organize them and we teach them free. Falun Gong is a high-level cultivation system, beyond ordinary Chi-gong that offers stress relief and health improvement. It has five sets of exercises that are smooth, slow, and easy to learn. It also has profound principles guiding the cultivation of mind and body. But unlike Tai-chi or Yoga, this system is advanced and is completely non-profitable. " They are even offering to run classes on invitation. In addition I found their currently published books have been put on the Internet for download for free download. All of this contrary to the accepted way of doing "business." in today's world. In the East it not considered ok to charge a fee for a lecture, lesson etc. May be the Eastern tradition has finally found its success in the West. mkr From ???@??? Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 0000 Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 04:55:32 -0400 (EDT) From: "W. Dallas TenBroeck" Subject: CYCLES: Rounds -- Globes -- Races July 29th 1999 Our study for this week: CYCLES: Rounds, Globes, Races, Prior to considering our study this week it is good to inquire into the motive and reason for our being involved in this complex consideration of evolution:. I. Madame Blavatsky epitomizes this as follows: "The "Master" in the Sanctuary of our souls is "the Higher Self"--the divine spirit whose consciousness is based upon and derived solely from the Mind, which we have agreed to call the Human Soul (the "Spiritual Soul" being the vehicle of the Spirit). In its turn the former (the personal or human soul) is a compound in its highest form, of spiritual aspirations, volitions, and divine love; and in its lower aspect, of animal desires and terrestrial passions imparted to it by association with its vehicle, the seat of all these. It thus stands as a link and a medium between the animal nature of man which its higher reason seeks to subdue, and his divine spiritual nature to which it gravitates, whenever it has the upper hand in its struggle with the inner animal. The latter is the instinctual "animal Soul" and is the hotbed of those passions, which, as just shown, are lulled instead of being killed, and locked up in their breasts by some imprudent enthusiasts." HPB Articles, Vol. II, pp. 105-6. "OCCULTISM VS. THE OCCULT ARTS". This week's study includes us, as a part of the study of cycles, This is because the whole of manifestation is designed to focus in human development, and its perfection, a consciousness of that vast Unity. Once this is attained, it can consciously perceive the whole Universe in its vast and totally inter-related variety as well as its essential Unity. Karma becomes clear to it. In the beginning of the SD, [Vol. 1, p. 120 ] the spiritual Instructor says: "Lift thy head, oh Lanoo; dost thou see one, or countless lights above thee, burning in the dark midnight sky?" "I sense one Flame, oh Gurudeva, I see countless undetached sparks shining in it." "Thou sayest well. And now look around and into thyself. That light which burns inside thee, dost thou feel it different in anywise from the light that shines in thy Brother-men?" "It is in no way different, though the prisoner is held in bondage by Karma, and though its outer garments delude the ignorant into saying, 'Thy Soul and My Soul.' " It thus becomes the task of restoring to our consciousness a sense of the vast amount of time that has already been spent in our own evolution. In the SD [ I 181 ], we find that HPB shows us that there are 3 lines of Evolution which meet and mingle in human progress. The Monadic (or Spiritual), the Intellectual (thought and feelings), and the physical. The Monad in evolution, is an eternal Being, compounded of Spirit/Matter. Hence the periods of time used in evolving the ever more material and "solid" bodies, and the intelligence that we can see giving those forms an independent consciousness, are enormous. The solidification of the material form alone occupied 3 "Rounds," through 7 "Globes" each. Along with that there was a separate development of consciousness, mind, and instinct. In considering the Spiritual as the starting point, Mme. Blavatsky in the SECRET DOCTRINE offers this concept: "There is one absolute Reality which antecedes all manifested, conditioned, being. This Infinite and Eternal Cause is the rootless root of "all that was, is, or ever shall be." It is of course devoid of all attributes and is essentially without any relation to manifested, finite Being. It is "Be-ness" rather than Being (in Sanskrit, Sat), and is beyond all thought or speculation...Thus, then, the first fundamental axiom of the Secret Doctrine is this metaphysical ONE ABSOLUTE--BENESS--symbolized by finite intelligence as the theological trinity." [ The Secret Doctrine, Vol. I, p. 14 ] How are we going to approach the divisions of time in which the evolution of consciousness and intelligence on our Earth ? In explaining these it became necessary to use words that implied those long periods. These were named :Rounds. A "Round" consisted of a "host" of Monads passing through 7 "Globes." Each "globe" was further divided into 7 "Races [or 7 "host"]," and each of those into 7 "Sub-races." The words do not employ the same meaning we give to them in ordinary speech. [For purpose of analogy we could arbitrarily say that a selected "Year" has 7 "months." Each "month" has 7 "weeks." Each "week" has 7 "days" and so on. The reason for the use of SEVEN is that the great Principles of Nature correspond to t he "human Principles." This 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 field of time gives the many permutations to combine and work with each other.] Everything takes place in Space. HPB explains in one place: "Space exists where there is nothing else, and must so exist whether the Universe is one absolute vacuum or a full Plenum. Space is what the ancients called the One invisible and unknown (now unknowable) Deity. " [ Transactions of the Blavatsky Lodge, p.. 12, ULT Edition ] A Master of Wisdom commented: "There is not one finger's breadth (angula) of void Space in the whole Boundless Universe)." [ SD I 289 ] "Reality in the manifested world is composed of a unity of units." [SD I 629] Our Earth, and we, ourselves, and the many beings in and on it are held in Theosophy to be the result of causes that were started earlier, in a previous cycle of evolution. The "causes of existence," is an all-inclusive term. These "causes" are the sum total of the KARMA of a World, (and all the beings that form it). In our case this Karma refers to the actions and thought-consequences we generated during the earlier Manvantara, or age of Brahmâ. We then lived and worked and played together in the same general fashion as we do now. No cause set in motion in Nature is ever lost. There is always a design, a Plan present in the Universal (or Absolute Mind) and this is carried forward through Pralaya after Pralaya, and from Manvantara to Manvantara. It is immutable. It is KARMA. There are Intelligent Mind-beings who are simultaneously the Servants and Guides of this Karma, the Universal WILL -- that "causeless cause." The highest Dhyanis [Wise Ones], the Logoi, carry forward and execute the details of that Plan. The Absolute is absolute consciousness eternally. This One consciousness becomes relative consciousness periodically, (through its constituent Monads) at every "Manvantaric dawn." "Every monad reflects every other. Every monad is a living mirror of the universe within its own sphere." [ SD I 631 ] The Divine Mind is, must be, before differentiation takes place. It is called the Divine Ideation, which is eternal in its Potentiality and periodical in its Potency. Then it becomes Mahat, Anima Mundi or Universal Soul. Mahat, is the great Manvantaric Principle of Intelligence. It acts through the uncountable Monads, as a "Brain" through which the Universal and Eternal Mind radiates those Dhyanis, as those who embody the nascent Consciousness or Ideation. As the shadow of this primordial triangle falls lower and lower through the descending planes [ Rounds and Globes ], it becomes with every stage more material. It is misleading to apply mechanical laws to the higher metaphysics of cosmogony, or to space and time, as we know them, for neither existed then. The reflection of the triad in space and time, or the objective universe, comes later. But we need also to ask what is the reason and purpose of all this. Mr. Judge offers these ideas: "What then is the universe for, and for what final purpose is man the immortal thinker here in evolution? It is all for the experience and emancipation of the soul, for the purpose of raising the entire mass of manifested matter up to the stature, nature, and dignity of conscious god-hood, The great aim is to reach to self-consciousness, by and through the perfecting after transformation, of the whole mass of matter, as well as what we now call soul. Nothing is or is to be left out. The aim for present man is his initiation into complete knowledge, and for the other kingdoms below him that they be raised up gradually from stage to stage to be in time initiated also. This is evolution carried to its highest power; it is a magnificent prospect; it makes of man a god, and gives to every part of nature the strength and possibility of being one day the same; there is strength and nobility in it, for by this no man is dwarfed and belittled, for no one is so originally sinful that he cannot rise above all sin." [ OCEAN, p. 60 ] But we may ask ourselves: What is the reason for our being here ? Let us consider together that in the hearts of all, at some time there arises the desire for knowledge. He who thinks his desires will be fulfilled, as the little bird in the nest, who has only to open his mouth to be fed, will very truly be disappointed. The soul develops like the flower, and unconsciously to the soil in which it grows. Shut out the light and the soil grows damp and sterile, the flower withers or grows pale and sickly. Each and every one is here for a good and wise reason. If we find partially the "why we are here," then is there not good reason that we should by intelligent contact, study life deeply, and seek in it the farther elucidation of the problem. It is not for the study of ourselves so much, as the thought for others that opens the door. The events of life and their causes lead to knowledge. They must be studied when they are manifested in daily life. Mme. Blavatsky offers us a very important and basic view to consider on this: "It is the Spiritual evolution of the inner, immortal man that forms the fundamental tenet in the Occult Sciences...the One Universal Life, independent of matter...and...the individual intelligences that animate the various manifestations of this Principle...The One Life is closely related to the one law which governs the World of Being--Karma." [ S D I 634 ] Writing to Mr. Sinnett on the subject of our evolution here, one of the Masters of Wisdom said: "Every Spiritual Individuality [Higher Manas] has a gigantic evolutionary journey to perform, a tremendous gyratory progress to accomplish. First--at the very beginning of the great Maha-manvanataric rotation, from first to last of the man-bearing "planets [Globes]," as on each of them, the monad has to pass through the seven successive races of man...up to the present fifth race, or rather variety, and through two more races, before he has done with this one. Each of the 7 races send 7 ramifying branchlets from the Parent Branch: and through each of these in turn man has to evolute before he passes on to the next higher race; and that--seven times...The branchlets typify varying specimens of humanity--physically and spiritually--and no one of us can miss one single rung of the ladder...when I say "man," I mean a human being of our type. There are other and innumerable manvantaric chains of globes bearing intelligent beings--both in and out of our solar system--the crowns or apexes of evolutionary being in their respective chains, some--physically and intellectually--lower, others immeasurably higher than the man of our chain..." [Mahatma Letters, p. 119, Barker Edn. ] One may thus further say that the object of this great process of evolutionary amalgamation and precipitation is to give to every race, as well as every individual Monad, the benefit of the progress and power of the whole derived from prior progress in other Globes, Rounds and earlier systems we used in prior Manvantaras Nature never does her work in a hasty fashion, but, by the sure method of mixture, precipitation, and separation, it brings about the greatest perfection...Hence man did not spring from a single pair. Neither did he come from any tribe or family of monkey. The SECRET DOCTRINE teaches that 7 races of men [ 7 categories of mind and temperament] appeared simultaneously on the earth at the beginning of this process. II If we wish to epitomize the whole evolutionary process we may say: This brings us to the doctrine of Universal Evolution as expounded by the Sages of the Wisdom-Religion. The Spirit, or Purusha, they say, proceeds from Brahma [the ABSOLUTE] through the various forms of matter evolved at the same time, beginning in the world of the spiritual from the highest and in the material world from the lowest form, one that is still unknown to modern science. Thus, therefore, the mineral, vegetable and animal forms each imprison a spark of the Divine, a portion of the indivisible Purusha. These are the Monads that are evolving all together, each at its own place and pace. These sparks struggle to "return to the Father," or in other words, to secure self-consciousness and at last come into the highest form, on Earth, that of man, where alone self-conscious-ness is possible to them. The period calculated in human time, during which this evolution goes on embraces millions of ages. Each spark of divinity has, therefore, millions of ages in which to accomplish its mission. All depends upon the individual's own will and efforts, we determine our own future by our choices. We can accelerate or retard our progress by our own choices. Each particular spirit [Monad] goes through the Manvantara, or enters into manifestation for its own enrichment and for that of the Whole. Man came to this "globe" from another, though of course then a being of very great power before being completely enmeshed in matter, so the lower kingdoms came likewise in germ and type from other globes, and carry on their evolution step by step upward by the aid of man, who is, in all periods of manifestation, at the front of the wave of life. This is the point where the intelligent aid and interference from a mind or mass of minds is absolutely necessary. Such aid and interference was and is the fact, for nature unaided cannot do the work right. It is Man who does this. Not the man of the day, weak and ignorant as he (we) are(is), but Great Souls, high and holy Men of immense power, knowledge and wisdom (just as every man would now know he could become). By methods known to themselves and to the Great Lodge they work on the forms so brought over, and by adding here, taking away there, and often altering, they gradually transform. This process is carried on chiefly in the purely astral period preceding the gross physical stage, as the impulses thus given will surely carry themselves forward through the succeeding times. When the midway point of evolution is reached the species emerge on to the present stage. Various names have been given to these beings now removed from our plane. They are the Dhyanis, the Creators, the Guides, the Great Spirits, and so on by many titles. Mahatmas and Rishis are thus gradually evolved during a Manvantara, and become after its expiration, "planetary spirits," who guide the evolution of other future planets and systems. The "planetary spirits" of our globe are those who in previous manvantaras made the efforts, and became in the course of that long period Mahatmas. This system is thus seen to be based upon the identity of Spiritual Being, [the One Universal Monad] and, under the name of "Universal Brotherhood," constitutes the basic idea of theosophy whose object is the realization of that Brotherhood among men. Man occupies the most important place in the whole scheme of evolution. He stands where Spirit and matter meet. He is the link between the higher beings and those below. He has so to act, so to think and act, in and upon and with this physical matter that he raises it all up, and gives it another tendency, another trend. By the very constitution of his nature, by reason of his being connected as he is in a physical body with all nature, the Secret Doctrine states that man can become greater than any one of the Dhyan Chohans and equal to all of them put together. That is the goal which lies before him--the goal of the "Kingly Mystery"--the seeing and knowing and feeling and acting universally. For there is a power in man which enables him to judge aright; he has the all-seeing eye--the all-encompassing sight which permits him to see the justice of all things. And always there is present the power of choice in one direction or another. The questions before each human being are: Whom will ye serve? Will you serve the higher spiritual nature, or the body of flesh?" In conclusion, let me quote something that Mr. Judge wrote. It offers us all not only food for reflection but a challenge: "A visitor from one of the other planets of the solar system who might learn the term Mahatma after arriving here would certainly suppose that the etymology of the word undoubtedly inspired the believers in Mahatmas with the devotion, fearlessness, hope, and energy which such an ideal should arouse in those who have the welfare of the human race at heart. The whole sweep, meaning, and possibility of evolution are contained in the word Mahatma. Maha is "great," Atma is "soul," and both compounded into one mean those great souls who have triumphed before us not because they are made of different stuff and are of some strange family, but just because they are of the human race. Reincarnation, karma, the sevenfold division, retribution, reward, struggle, failure, success, illumination, power, and a vast embracing love for man, all these lie in that single word. The soul emerges from the unknown, begins to work in and with matter, is reborn again and again, makes karma, develops the 6 vehicles for itself, meets retribution for sin and punishment for mistake, grows strong by suffering, succeeds in bursting through the gloom, is enlightened by true illumination, grasps power, retains charity, expands with love for orphaned humanity, and thenceforth helps all others who remain in darkness until all may be raised up to the place with the "Father in Heaven" who is the Higher Self." [WQJ Art. II, p. 39-4 CONCLUSION HPB states: "He who would profit by the wisdom of the universal mind, has to reach it through the whole of Humanity without distinction of race, complexion, religion or social status. It is altruism, not ego-ism even in its most legal and noble conceptions, that can lead the unit to merge its little Self in the Universal Selves. It is to these needs and to this work that the disciple of true Occultism has to devote himself, if he would obtain Theosophy, divine Wisdom and Knowledge." [ HPB Art. II 107 ] Applying this to Mankind, HPB adds: "...our Ego is a ray of the Universal Mind, individualized for the space of a cosmic life-cycle, during which space of time it gets experience in almost numberless reincarnations or rebirths, after which it returns to its Parent-Source. The Occultist would call the "Higher Ego" the immortal Entity, whose shadow and reflection is the human Manas, the mind limited by its physical senses. The two may be well compared to the Master-artist and the pupil-musician. In the course of natural evolution our "brain-mind" will be replaced by a finer organism, and helped by the 6th [Buddhi] and the 7th [Atma] senses..." [ Theos. Articles & Notes, p. 208 ] I wonder if these ideas can be expanded and if there are more important quotations from the Philosophy that can be brought forward for all of us to consider Best wishes to all, Dallas dalval@nwc.net From ???@???
