Chuck the Heretic The 1998 Darwin Awards They have finally been released! For those not familiar with the Darwin Award - It's an annual [dis]honor given to the person who did the universal human gene pool the biggest service by getting killed in the most extraordinarily stupid way. As always, competition this year has been keen again. Some candidates appear to have trained their whole lives for this event. The Darwin Awards Nominees: 1. In September in Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing headfirst through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys. 2. In October, a 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who "totally zoned when he ran," according to his wife, accidentally jogged off a 200-foot-high cliff on his daily run. 3. Buxton, NC: A man died on a beach when an 8-foot-deep hole he had dug into the sand caved in as he sat inside it. Beachgoers said Daniel Jones, 21, dug the hole for fun, or protection from the wind, and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom Thursday afternoon when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach, on the outer banks, used their hands and shovels, trying to claw their way to Jones, a resident of Woodbridge, VA, but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him while about 200 people looked on. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. 4. In February, Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed in Lompoc, CA, as he fell face-first through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth (to keep his hands free) rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor. 5. According to police in Dahlonega, GA, ROTC cadet Nick Berrena, 20, was stabbed to death in January by fellow cadet Jeffrey Hoffman, 23, who was trying to prove that a knife could not penetrate the flak vest Berrena was wearing. 6. Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed in February in Selbyville, Del., as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger. 7. In February, according to police in Windsor, Ont., Daniel Kolta, 27, and Randy Taylor, 33, died in a head-on collision, thus earning a tie in the game of chicken they were playing with their snowmobiles. 8. In September, a 7-year-old boy fell off a 100-foot-high bluff near Ozark, Ark., after he lost his grip swinging on a cross that marked the spot where another person had fallen to his death in 1990. 9. AUGUSTA, ME - Four people were injured in a string of bizarre accidents. Sherry Moeller was admitted with a head wound caused by flying masonry, Tim Vegas was diagnosed with a mild case of whiplash and contusions on his chest, arms and face, Bryan Corcoran suffered torn gum tissue, and Pamela Klesick's first two fingers of her right hand had been bitten off. Moeller had just dropped her husband off for his first day of work and, in addition to a good-bye kiss, she flashed her breasts at him. "I'm still not sure why I did it," she said later. "I was really close to the car, so I didn't think anyone would see. Besides, it couldn't have been for more than two seconds." However, cab driver Vegas did see, and lost control of his cab, running over the curb and into the corner of the Johnson Medical Building. Inside, Klesick, a dental technician, was cleaning Corcoran's teeth. The crash of the cab against the building made her jump, tearing Corcoran's gums with a cleaning pick. In shock, he bit down, severing two fingers from Klesick's hand. Moeller's wound was caused by a falling piece of the medical building. 10. TAOS, NM - A woman went to a poison control center after eating three birth-control vaginal inserts. Her English was so bad she had to draw a picture describing how she believed she had poisoned herself. A translator arrived shortly thereafter and confirmed doctors' suspicions. Marie Valishnokov thought the inserts were some kind of candy or gum, being unable to read the foil wrappers. After the third one, she realized something was wrong when her throat and mouth began to fill with sour-tasting foam. She ran for the Poison Control Center, only a few blocks away where doctors were able to flush the foam from her mouth, throat, and stomach with no ill effects. 11. TACOMA, WA - Kerry Bingham, had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more heated and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 a.m. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge they discovered that no one had brought bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of cable had been left near the railing. One end was tied to Bingham's leg and the other end was tied to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy river water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. "All I can say,"said Bingham, "is that God was watching out for me on that night. There's just no other explanation for it." Bingham's foot was never located. 12. On February 3, 1990, a Renton, Washington man tried to commit a robbery. This was probably his first attempt, as suggested by the fact that he had no previous record of violent crime, and by his terminally stupid choices as listed below: 1. The target was H&J Leather & Firearms, a gun shop; 2. The shop was full of customers, in a state where a substantial portion of the adult population is licensed to carry concealed handguns in public places; 3. To enter the shop, he had to step around a marked Police patrol car parked at the front door; 4. An officer in uniform was standing next to the counter, having coffee before reporting to duty. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, removing him from the gene pool. Several other customers also drew their guns, but didn't fire. No one else was hurt. 13. In France, Jacques LeFevrier left nothing to chance when he decided to commit suicide. He stood at the top of a cliff and tied a noose around his neck. He tied the other end of the rope to a large rock. He drank some poison and set fire to his clothes. He even tried to shoot himself at the last moment. He jumped and fired the pistol. The bullet missed him completely and cut through the rope above him. Free of the threat of changing, he plunged into the sea. The sudden dunking extinguished the flames and made him vomit the poison. He was dragged out of the water by a kind fisherman and was taken to hospital, where he died - of hypothermia. DARWIN AWARD HONOURABLE MENTIONS (1) In Guthrie, Okla., in October, Jason Heck tried to kill a millipede with a shot from his .22-caliber rifle, but the bullet ricocheted off a rock near the hole and hit pal Antonio Martinez in the head, fracturing his skull. 2) In Elyria, Ohio, in October, Martyn Eskins, attempting to clean out cobwebs in his basement, declined to use a broom in favor of a propane torch and caused a fire that burned the first and second floors of his house. (3) Paul Stiller, 47, was hospitalized in Andover Township, NJ, in September, and his wife Bonnie was also injured, by a quarter-stick of dynamite that blew up in their car. While driving around at 2 AM, the bored couple lit the dynamite and tried to toss it out the window to see what would happen, but they apparently failed to notice that the window was closed. (4) Taking "Amateur Night" Too Far: In Betulia, Colombia, an annual festival in November includes five days of amateur bullfighting. This year, no bull was killed, but dozens of matadors were injured, including one gored in the head and one Bobbittized. Said one participant, "It's just one bull against [a town of] a thousand Morons." AND THE WINNER IS.... Japan Times-April 16, 1997 "The government must crack down on this disgusting craze of 'Pumping'", a spokesman for the Nakhon Ratchasima hospital told reporters. "If this perversion catches on, it will destroy the cream of Thailand's manhood. " He was speaking after the remains of 13 year-old Charnchai Puanmuangpak had been rushed into the hospital's emergency room. "Most 'Pumpers' use a standard bicycle pump," he explained, "inserting the nozzle far up their rectum, giving them a rush of air, creating a momentary high. This act is a sin against God." Charnchai took it further still. He started using a two-cylinder foot pump, but even that wasn't exciting enough for him, and he boasted to friends that he was going to try the compressed air hose at a nearby gasoline station. They dared him to do it so, under cover of darkness, he snuck in. Not realizing how powerful the machine was, he inserted the tube deep into his rectum, and placed a coin in the slot. As a result, he died virtually instantly, but passers-by are still in shock. One woman thought she was watching a twilight fireworks display, and started clapping. "We still haven't located all of him", say the police authorities. "When that quantity of air interacted with the gas in his system, he nearly exploded. It was like an atom bomb went off or something." "Pumping is the devil's pastime, and we must all say no to Satan," Ratchasima concluded. "Inflate your tires by all means, but then hide your bicycle pump where it cannot tempt you." Let's hear it for Charnchai Puanmuangpak, the NEW 1998 undisputed Darwin Awards recipient! From ???@??? Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 0000 Date: Wed, 26 Aug 1998 23:15:11 -0500 From: M K Ramadoss Subject: Encounter with entities Message-ID: <3.0.3.32.19980826231511.011bbbb0@mail.eden.com> Here is an interesting post from Krishnamurti maillist. Any feedback? mkr After an initial reading, the writings of Krishnamurti seem straightforward. He advocates "choiceless awareness," and says that this may result in a quiet mind, allowing Reality to enter. He isn't specific about what this Reality is, which is probably for the best ("the Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao"). However, I would like to discuss lesser "realities" - the bathwater that comes with the baby, so to speak. I would like advice on how to deal with these in a manner consistent with Krishnamurti's teaching. I realize that the following will appear bizarre, if not psychotic; I can only ask that you assume the truth of what I relate for purposes of discussion. Last September, I became involved with a group that follows the teachings of George Gurdjieff. Their meditation practice involved "sitting" for half an hour and sensing parts of the body one by one. By November, I was experiencing an inflow of energy - which is one of the aims of the practice. However, later that month, and well into February of this year, I began to experience invisible hands and arms touching me, gently guiding my movements, working on me (injecting some kind of material into my head; spreading a granular material on my back and legs), and caressing me. I thought these entities were helpers of some kind. However, just before Christmas, *some* of the hands began to sexually manipulate me. And after that, they became generally mischievous, if not obnoxious. I've left this Gurdjieff group and have decided that simple awareness without specific techniques might be better for me. There is more to tell, but I'd like to leave it there for now and move on to my questions. (I'd be happy to go into more detail by private email.) I remember K saying that techniques will produce their own results, and I suppose it's possible that the technique I used generated or summoned the entities I describe, but didn't K himself deal with intelligent, non-physical individuals? Wasn't that a feature of his "process"? I also remember reading that K casually remarked to a friend as they sat in a garden that he could see a "fairy" dancing nearby. Finally, I have read that K told intimates that sometimes "evil" can be present, that it tends to come when mentioned, and that in such an event the area has to be "cleansed." As I practice awareness, along with centering prayer (a form of contemplative prayer), I continue to feel occasional touches, as well as the presence of some kind of entity (for instance, sitting on my bed or a yoga mat, I can feel it walking around, depressing the surface as it moves). Now, I'm not at all interested in a relationship with these entities. Neither do I wish to obsess about them. I realize that they are a distraction. But should I simply maintain awareness of them? My sense is that, when I give them attention, they know it and become more aggressive. This is a dilemma for me, because if I withhold attention, I'm maintaining resistance to "what is." In the interest of full disclosure, I should tell you that I've seen three psychiatrists since mid-January. The first one told me that my experiences were hypnotically induced. The second one, a Moslem, told me after 4 sessions that he didn't think I was schizophrenic or otherwise psychotic because I evidenced no thought disorder and suggested I see a Catholic priest for exorcism. The third has diagnosed me with schizoaffective disorder. My guess is that the cause of my experiences is not psychosis, although I have continued psychiatric treatment to "cover my bets." So what can you all suggest? What does one do when "what is" is bizarre, and one's spiritual practice has opened one to other realities? Tim Mulligan From ???@??? I went through a period like that when I was at Portland State University, a ft student, pt working, & pt studying with THE CHURCH OF DIVINE MAN there, learning to control my over-abundant intuition. That would be around 1882-83. I remember the added concentrations upon the psychic levels had that affect on me, where I would be trying to fall asleep, & instead went into heavy paralysis, simultaneous to my mind spinning akin into a vortex, & "coming to" in a dream place; but it looked the same, only there WAS a malevolent spirit there & I was helpless to move my body. Got to the point where I was frightened to go to sleep, it did! Once, during a finals week, I was resting in the afternoon, & the spinning vortex phenomena beset me; but this time there were spirits all around my bed, & they were toying with me, lifting *my* spirit out of my body & putting it back down again. Oh yes, my REAL body was again paralyzed. I could look down & see this, but I couldn't see them, just feel their pressure where they held me. Awhile later down the road, I was literally raped by an evil spirit, who was pretending to be my boyfriend at the time (who was gone). I swear the spirits can & do feel as real as flesh & blood; whether it is a mind trick, or they can come & go - I know not which. Henceforth, & in conclusion, I - for one - believe you! Being strongly grounded & centered in your body & visualizing white light surrounding one's self is a good protection from whatever disincarnate being or thoughtforms might enter. I stopped with the heavy concentration exercises with the CHURCH OF DIVINE MANS within this period because I was genuinely frightened! These realities cannot be disputed once one encounters them! And - being too afraid to go to sleep is NOT *fun*! Besides, this was all about 15 years ago now! I prefer to not inter-mingle with dross discarnate energy drains, and somehow I grew into THAT reality, keeping my own *personal power* about me at all times! - From ???@??? "Among the fastest-growing groups online were blacks and Indians, as well as young adults 16-24 and women over 50. The study showed an increase of 50 percent in the number of American women over 50 using the Internet during the nine months ending in June, accounting for nearly 5 million users. The numbers of men under 50 using the Internet grew almost half as fast during the same period. .the study estimated that 70.2 million Americans over 16 use the Internet. That represents 35 percent of adult Americans... And for the first time, the report said, the majority of Americans between 16-24 are using the Internet -- about 18.8 million of them, including 70 percent of men in that age group and 51 percent of women. "I'm still pretty new to it," confessed Diane Park, a social worker near Seattle and an Internet neophyte who logs on from her local library." But a closer look at the figures showed the largest gains in Internet use among some minorities: Asian adults were especially active online, with the highest rates of all racial groups: 58 percent of Asian men and 38 percent of Asian women. Among blacks, the report estimated 24 percent use the Internet, an increase of 53 percent from nine months earlier. The report estimated that 868,000 American Indians were online, or 24 percent, an increase of 70 percent over nine months. Last month, a report from the Commerce Department showed that whites are more than twice as likely to own a home computer as blacks or Hispanics, and that a racial disparity in PC ownership exists even among families earning more than $75,000. Small books stores are replaced by large chains. Another phenomenon is the cyberselling of books. Here is an interesting experience. When I urgently needed a book, I looked up amazon.com and they did not have it in stock. It will take 6 to 8 weeks to special order. Visited two Barnes and Noble book stores with no luck. Then visited the Barnes & Noble website. Bingo. They had it in stock and can ship immediately and with 20% discount as well plus shipping charges. All it took was to enter my name and address and provide credit card information. Within a short time a confirmation e-mail was received. Was also informed that a e-mail would be sent as soon as shipping takes place. In 24 hours I got another e-mail confirming that it has been shipped by USPS priority mail. If traditional books stores operating on 9-5 office hours are run out of business, is there any wonder. Larger outfits and those on cyberspace are able to provide better pricing and better service and in this free market, the natural result will be lack of business and ultimately resulting in disappearance of the small books stores. For many of us operating on round the clock, (I am writing this letter on a Saturday at 11.00pm) the cyberspace ordering of publications and other material comes in very handy and that is where the business is going to go to. Thought I should share this phenomenon. ..mkr From ???@??? Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 0000 Date: Sun, 23 Aug 1998 17:54:05 +0200 From: wichm@xs4all.nl Subject: Japan's underwater pyramid? With a 10Mbps Ethernet access, I was able to down load a 15MB file in less than 3 minutes. For example the entire 2 volume SD can be downloaded in less than 2 minutes. This is possible not in any high tech large corporation. This is possible now for students in colleges. Access possible from libraries, dining areas, departments, and dorms at no extra cost to the student. The access is provided as part of the facilities provided to the students. I think this gives a taste of things to come within the reach of every man, woman and child. The point that is of importance to theosophists is that all the classics will be immediately accessible at *almost* *no* *cost* (other than one's time) and everyone interested can benefit from theosophy classics. On the other hand, some of the classics are already available on the web. But some theosophical organizations are still wedded to print media. How long it is going to take for them to understand the possible shrinking *market* for printed media which can be sold where as info on the net is free for most part. Information access due to Internet and the growth of e-mail as a medium of communication is showing an astounding growth with no end in sight. The father agreed to try, and accordingly they took their sons to the preacher. He said he would try, but desired to speak to the children separately, starting with the youngest who was 8 years old. The parents left him there and took their 11 year old back home. The preacher sat the child down in front of him and asked "Son, where is God ?" The boy looked at him, pressed his lips together and said nothing. A few moments passed and the preacher leaning forward, said a little more forcefully: "Son, I asked you: "Where is GOD ?" Again silence, but the child drew back with alarm, and look very startled. The preacher waited five minutes in silence, and then leaned forward again and with great emphasis said: "WHERE IS GOD ?" Thoroughly alarmed the child jumped out of the chair and ran home. Getting there, he ran upstairs and hid in a closet. His older brother saw that and ran after him In there he asked what had happened. The 8 year old said: "We are in serious trouble. God is missing, and they say we have something to do with it." From the other hand, from mahatma letters follow that in their Tibet there's always lack of paper, ink and other things like that, so it would be similarly with an Internet access, especially under chinese occupation. It would be interesting to investigate another questions - can we use computers for receiving messages from disembodied spirits? For instance a medium can charge the keyboard by his eheric substance enabling for a spirit an easy access to PC. It wouldn't be more difficult for a spirit than use of conventional tablets, blackboards and devices like that but will increase CPS rate and provide messages in a convenient ASCII format. If this idea will work, mahatmas also can use this method. With best wishes, Konstantin (still embodied). @ home: ziatz@chat.ru http://www.chat.ru/~ziatz From ???@??? Well, this is Alan wondering. Now let's see what  Doss says:

Don't you all know it is a big day in Washington DC tomorrow?

Everyone is expecting to learn about all the salacious details from Clinton
who is going to tell the truth in all its graphic details so that all
families with children will turn off TV and don't even open up the newspapers.

mkr
Well, that's Doss version. In Mexico we care more about the ilicit fortune of
Carlos Salinas  (The expresident) and Raul Salinas (the expresident's brother)  that of the quantity of forbidden
romances of both of them. Who cares!!

Now let's see what Dallas says:

I wonder if you no longer receive theos-talk ?
As far as I am concerned I
am back on line with both the computer and my body fixed up again.  I was
ill with pneumonia and the computer crashed twice.

As far as I am concerned also, my mail system was just fixed, i desuscribe
to theos-talk (Hoping that  i can get the rithm someday) and ALSO was
struck with pneumonia two months ago. just recovered and ready to go
to the beach!!

Have fun friends!!

Estrella   :-)

P.S. Oh, just remembered that this is a theosophic list:
"the" subject for today:

Do you think we could comunicate with the masters by e-mail??  :p

"Take your hand off me!" Liberty snaps back. Italy's best-selling daily Corriere della Sera carried a cartoon showing Clinton holding up his hand but looking down his trousers as he said: "I swear on everything I hold most dear." Italy's center-left La Repubblica showed a naked Clinton clasping his stars-and-stripes boxer shorts, captioned in English: "Starr and strip forever." Corriere said the real tragedy was the confrontation between Clinton and his true self, between the President of the United States and the boy who never knew his father. Britain's Sun tabloid said in an editorial that Clinton had demeaned his high office. "Maybe it is unrealistic to expect politicians to act like angels. They are human beings like the rest of us after all. One affair, maybe two, might be excusable. But Bill Clinton is a serial philanderer," it said. "A world that has no respect for the leader of America, has no fear of America either," The Sun said. The French provincial daily Midi Libre focused its anger on the American media and its justice system. "The obscenity of the media-judicial circus is far more disturbing than a presidential womaniser's lack of sexual control," a Midi Libre editorial said. "Clinton is certainly not virtuous, but in offering this 'official lie' he has more tragically betrayed his own family than the American people," it said. The Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet questioned whether the United States could now "wash away the stain" of Monday's "absurd spectacle." "(This is) a country where a dual morality, hypocrisy and nonsense have been allowed to dominate politics and the mass media for years, and this don't make it look so reliable as a world policeman," the tabloid said. "Clinton's careful confession yesterday and his apology probably means he will be able to remain president, but with reduced authority and this ridicule hanging over him." French Socialist deputy Jack Lang, reflecting France's strong distaste for meddling in people's private lives, volunteered to organise free-thinking artists, intellectuals and politicians into an international support movement for Clinton. Felings and desires are no one's business but one's own," Lang said in a statement. "Oppressive regimes never hesitate to dive into one's private life." But Italy's right-leaning Il Giornale, accusing the U.S. president of regularly twisting the truth, had some advice for his wife: "Dear Hillary, when the stock markets are shut, you ought to pack your bags." Here is some interesting news. In some universities, they are making it a requirement that every student get a notebook computer. Every chair in every class room has a Ethernet and power outlets so that computer can be plugged into local area network. In many of the dining rooms, there are Ethernet jacks. For those who are in a place where it is not practical to have jack, wireless Ethernet option is there. Just go to the library (round the clock) and check out a wireless PCMCIA card and your notebook can communicate wireless with Ethernet and from it on to Internet. Who can tell what is going to happen in the years to come. One thing is sure -- everyone better keep up with what technology is doing -- this includes all organizations -- or will be left behind and run over. More updates as they become available. mkr From ???@??? Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 0000 Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 21:06:34 -0500 From: M K Ramadoss Subject: Re: Hello? Cool! NewsBytes 14-AUG-98 By Bob Woods GLENCOE, ILLINOIS, U.S.A., 1998 AUG 14 (Newsbytes) -- No matter how easy e-mail services claim to be, they always need a computer that's usually tethered to the phone system. A new service out of the suburbs of Chicago, though, promises to take the PC out of e-mail retrieval. Glencoe, Ill.-based Planetary Motion said its CoolMail product lets people who receive e-mail messages from Post Office Protocol (POP)-3 e-mail boxes listen to their messages over the phone. CoolMail users receive their own e-mail mail address, ending in "@planetarymotion.net." A member can respond to the e-mail by using any of four predefined replies that they create at Planetary Motion's Web site. Members can also send audio replies to any other CoolMail user, who can then also reply via a voice message. What's more, CoolMail delivers its basic services for free. CoolMail's automated attendant "reads" messages to users via state-of- the-art voice technology that converts text to speech. Target markets for the new service include the traveling sales and business executive, although "we quickly found that almost everyone on the go would benefit from this service," said Michael O'Roark, Planetary Motion president. Planetary Motion makes its money from advertising, similar to radio or TV ads, and additional services. For the ads, Planetary Motion asks potential users for "simple" demographic data during the sign-up procedure, and the company guarantees it will never divulge specific information about its members. Additional fee-based services include long distance access to the network at $0.10 a minute; responding to non-CoolMail members by voice and having the CoolMail system transcribe the message, at $0.02 per spoken word, and sending audio replies to non-CoolMail members, for $0.10 per reply. CoolMail debuted in 13 major markets Friday: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, DC, Dallas, Atlanta, Seattle, Miami, Denver, Milwaukee, Boston and Toronto. Planetary Motion said it plans to take its service nationwide by the end of 1998. CoolMail's and Planetary Motion's Web site is located at www.planetarymotion.com . Sun Jan 00 00:00:00 0000 Date: Thu, 13 Aug 1998 01:54:36 +0100 From: "Dr. A.M.Bain" Subject: Simply Occult Message-ID: SIMPLY OCCULT (1) In these short articles I hope to put into plain English the elements involved for individual development on the spiritual path. Although coming from a Kabbalist perspective, serious students who wish to do so will be able to make comparitive studies with other theosophical approaches and be able to confirm that there is a direct relationship between them. Two things I wish to make clear (please note for future reference, and if appropriate, your own work): 1. I give the Teaching as I have received it. Do not believe a word I say - check it out for yourself from your own experience. Teaching is NOT experience, only a series of signposts. 2. Following the Rosicrucian tradition, everything I offer in these articles is given freely and placed in the public domain. Should anyone alter or adapt my writings, then I ask them to state that they have done so, indicating where, how, and why. Introductory Remarks Individual development is just that - development. We all develop in ways suitable to our needs and natures. This has nothing to do with "evolution" or "progress," and no one is superior or more "advanced" than anyone else. Some of us may know a little more than others, but that does not make us in any way superior than others, nor does it entitle us to tell others what to do or how to do it. There is no hierarchy in the universe in the sense that any intelligence "rules" over the life or lives of any other intelligence, other than artificial constructs of such a kind developed by human beings for personal advantage, often under the guise of "humanitarian" concerns. Everything simply IS - what we do with it is our own responsibility. The important thing here is that responsibility inevitably brings consequences, some good, some bad. It helps to discover the difference, often as a result of painful experience. The Structure of the Individual Human Being Each of us has a fourfold structure; ie., in this physical world we are composed of four "elements" or states of being. None of these is "better" or "worse" than any other, except subjectively. They are simply different, with different attributes. These four may be described as follows: 1. The Physical State, as in arms, legs, livers, etc. This includes a physicality with which science has problems, and which is sometimes described as the "etheric" or "subtle" body. 2. The Non-Physical State, often badly labelled as "astral" or "soul" state. It does not require a physical body. 3. The Individual State, or "higher self" or "true soul." It too does not require a physical body, nor does it require the Non-Physical State as described in "2" above. 4. The Spiritual State, or Essence. it requires none of the other three, and is our true and original State of Being. Where We Are Where we are is here, now, in a physical world in a physical body. This body contains ALL four of the above elements at one and the same time. If we lose any one of them we become either insane or dead - with the exception of the Physical State. If we lose that, we become just dead. We are not, however, thereby destroyed, as we continue to BE in the remaining three States. We can never, though, lose the Spiritual State. What we call development is simply a transition - in awareness and/or consciousness - from one State to another. We do not need to go anywhere to do this, for all four States are right here, wherever we are, right now. In "Simply Occult (2)" I shall try to explain how to start out on the spiritual path. For those who want the jargon, go to the website listed (http://www.nellie2.demon.co.uk) and download my "Keys to Kabbalah." For those who have already started, please be patient. I'll get to the exciting bits in due course. Initially, I am placing this first article on the mailing lists TI-L, THEOS-L and the website already mentioned, where I shall make a DIRECTORY link to a folder labelled Simply Occult. After this I shall post *only* to TI-L and the website, to avoid the irritating consequence of getting the same posting from more than one source. I suggest therefore that theos-l susbscribers who have not yet done so take out a subscription to TI-L by sending an e-mail to listproc@vnet.net with no subject header and the single line subscribe ti-l Alan Bain, 13th August, 1998. --------- THEOSOPHY INTERNATIONAL: Working for a New Age: http://www.nellie2.demon.co.uk/ E-mail: TI@nellie2.demon.co.uk From ???@??? Consider the case of Olcott. Before he came into touch with HPB, while a man of very high integrity and talents, he was a man of bars, nightclubs and women. He was a smoker and meat eater. In the traditional model of a candidate for attention of an Adept, he will be the most unfit person. On the other hand, the Brothers who launched TS found him to be their best choice. In one of the letters to APS, one of the Brothers clearly stated that while Olcott was far from perfect he was the best man available for the job. BTW, in one of the letters to APS one of the Brothers did mention that if there were 10s of thousands of people leading a very pure life but they did not chose them due to their wrong beliefs which are more difficult to deal with rather than some of the purely physical habits like smoking and meat eating etc. During his life time, Olcott was blessed with personally meeting several Brothers. It should also be noted that when he and HPB lived in Adyar he ate meat and also enjoyed smoking his cigar. In a similar manner, HPB also was a meat eater and smoker. Nor did she fit into the "cultured" model of the day. She swore and used language not fit for "cultured" society. I do not think that she sought and found the Brothers. One of the Brothers always kept a watchful eye on her from the day she was born. So when we talk of looking for Adepts by leading a model life – non smoking, non-meat eating, celibacy, non use of fur etc. while all of that may be good for health of the physical body, I am wondering if lot more is needed in one's quest for looking for an Adept. Like Willie Nelson's song – "Looking for love in all the wrong places", may be it is time to re-examine the whole question and ask ourselves if we are Looking for the Adept in all the wrong places... Perhaps when a Brother knows that we can get a job done in the interests of Humanity, there may no need to look for a Brother. Brothers will come knocking. mkr.../\... From ???@??? The world's one billion Roman Catholics will be able to hear and see the Pontiff recite his Angelus prayer on Sundays, conduct his general audience on Wednesdays and follow other ceremonies in the Vatican as well as the Pope's travels abroad. "This is a further sign of the Holy See's efforts to boost its presence in the world of modern social communication to favour the spread and knowledge of the Papal Magisterium and strengthen the bonds of ecclesiastical communion," it said in a statement. In a recent report in Computerworld, US is planning to provide a e-mail addresses for all Americans. This is similar to a proposal made in U.K some time ago. We can look for very unusal opportunities for communicating with everyone in the world in the future. Upsides: Instant communication with large numbers of people around the world. Extremely low cost of communication. Increase in the volume of communication. Increase in the velocity of communication. Unfiltered/uncensored instant communication. Ability to present Theosophy to a large number of people at very little cost. Instant distribution of information about the happenings in one part of the world to all parts of the world. Breaking the strangle hold on the communication by established organizations. Leveling of the field between the haves and have-nots. An individual can have the same communication power as a multimillion dollar organization. Leveling of the field for people with a variety of backgrounds and beliefs and opinions. Leveling of the field without any discrimination of caste, creed, sex, color or national origin. Interested individuals have immediate access to information at no or very little cost. No admission or donation needed to access information. And more........... Downsides: Organization which have thrived on controlling the channel of communication between it and its members, clients, customers will lost the control. Organizations which have thrived on censoring and editing of the distributed messages, will no longer be able to do it. Organizations with large budgets have to compete with poor-man/woman who are fired with enthusiasm for cause. Organizations find it difficult to silence its critics. For some organizations, the very purpose of their existence will evaporate. Individuals may have to face messages not to their personal liking. International organizations no longer will be able to limit the knowledge of the happenings in one country from getting broadcast to all other countries. Need to read messages not to our personal liking due to their contents or the vocabulary. And more........... Look for exciting developments inthe near future, mkr =============================================== Clinton backs universal e-mail plan August 7, 1998 Web posted at: 10:50 AM EDT by Tom Diederich (IDG) -- The Clinton administration wants all Americans to have an e-mail address to go along with their street address and is asking the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the project's backbone. The idea is to connect physical and electronic addresses using the nation's Internet "country code" -- the top-level ".us" domain. Then a company or government agency, for example, could send bills or bulletins to your electronic mailbox as well as your home. The administration said the move would "accelerate and universalize the growth of electronic commerce," according to the Postal Service. Every country has a top-level domain. In many countries, such as Japan, companies and other organizations incorporate their nation's top-level domain into their Web site addresses. .. The administration is looking ahead to the day when most Americans have access to the Internet or at least e-mail from their homes. "Everybody would have an e-mail address, and for those who cannot access it right now, it would be downloaded and sent to them through the mail" so that they could use it at a library or other facility with Internet access, Brennan said. You may have read recently that there is potential for unauthorized programs to be run on your system through the use of hostile Java scripts and/or applets. This problem affects users of the Windows versions of Eudora Pro Email 4.0 and 4.0.1, as well as Eudora Pro CommCenter 4.0 and 4.0.1. Note that Eudora Light users, users of previous versions of Eudora Pro, and Macintosh users are not susceptible to these Java attacks. QUALCOMM became aware of this problem yesterday (8/6/98) and will be offering an updater for Windows Eudora Pro and CommCenter 4.0.1 and 4.0 within the next few hours that addresses these issues and will prevent these types of attacks. QUALCOMM will also make available a new Eudora Pro 4.1 beta that contains these fixes by Friday afternoon Pacific Standard Time. Until the new software is posted, you can protect yourself by turning off the Microsoft viewer from within Eudora. To do this, follow these steps: 1.In Eudora, go to the Tools menu and choose "Options". 2.On the left hand side of the options window, select "Viewing Mail" 3.On the right hand side of the options window, make sure the box next to "Use Microsoft's viewer" is UNCHECKED. 4.Click on "OK" on the bottom of the window. Eudora Pro Email, Eudora Pro CommCenter and Eudora Light are not susceptible to buffer overflow security problem QUALCOMM rigorously tested its line of Eudora email software after becoming aware of the buffer overflow security problems recently found in Microsoft and Netscape email programs. QUALCOMM is pleased to announce that its Eudora email products are not susceptible to the types of attacks that can harm the computers of users of these other products. QUALCOMM tested Eudora Pro and Eudora CommCenter versions 4.0, as well as Eudora Pro and Eudora Light versions 3.0 on both the Windows and Macintosh platforms. In all cases, Eudora does not allow any unauthorized programs to be automatically executed on a user's system. From ???@??? After that, your computer could be forced torun malicious code that's actually contained right in that long filename. I might draw your attention to the fact, that the same overflow occures in the webbrowser wenn you put a very long URL in the bookmarks. Often you don't see this long name in the status-bar. Those long names especially occure on sites where you are persistant invited to mark these sites. Although some of these sites mark themselves automaticly. Next time you try to validate your bookmarks or try to reach that site by clicking on your mark, the browser will have a crash down, but the internet-connection stays on. When you do allow Active-X or JAVA somebody can work around on your PC during that time and you would'nt notice. Dear Eldon, is not a matter of discriminating your list (I LIKE your list) but is just TOO LONG for me to read it. i also will resign for other lists that i have suscription. I was also going to resign from theos-lists,but after i read something about Alan's problem, i said to me: "Well, i cannot resign from the little theos-club treehouse"!!! Is a wonderful place, where i have meet you wonderful pepole, and i think i have to be in contact. Well, i guess that's all for today. sorry folks. Estrella P.S. I'll comeback soon!! :p ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.netaddress.com/?N=1 From ???@??? YEEEAAAAAHHH!!!! HORRAY FOR ALAN !! YIP In a message dated 98-07-31 21:45:41 EDT, you write: >P.S. Thank Dear Chuck for your delightful humor and commentaries that makes >our life just simply adorable. sometimes someone is some upset, and you >manage to tell us that our problems are only nonesense. it is only the ONE >that matters, and you have a great way to telling it. Thanks but I hope that if someone is really having a SERIOUS problem that I'm not accidentally making light of it (it does happen at times and I tend to feel real bad when it does). It's the tendency to make giant buildings out of little bumps that needs to be zapped on occasion. I've found that one of the weaknesses of my theosophic brethren is the lack of critical thinking at embarrassing times (witness the labyrinth nonsense at Summer School this last week) and rather than get into longwinded disputations that take up a lot of time and accomplish nothing, I prefer to use the Gordian Knot method and just cut through the flapdoodle with a well-placed acerbity. It's sort of like one time one of the board members, who shall mercifully remain nameless, gave one of his more syrupy accounts of some event he had been at and I responded by telling him that I never ceased to be amazed at how he could say such utter bullshit with a straight face.
