Actually, all he had to do was quote the governor of Louisiana who said "The
only sex scandal that could hurt me would be if I were found in bed with a
dead woman or a live boy."

The problem came with the denials.  If he had said, "Sure, what's the big
deal?"  everyone would have had a good laugh and then forgot it.
