Not quite a reply to your question, but I can vouch for the fact (as I
have experienced it) that contacting or working on the "higher planes"
worked fine long before I became a vegetarian and long before I stopped
smoking.  The latter choices are personal, and I do not see them as
related to "spiritual development" for anyone except perhaps myself, but
even that is probably not relevant, as there will be no veggieburgers or
smokes in the next world, IMO,
