        This poem was printed on the cover of the December '96 "Canadian
Theosophist". It's by Phyllis Olin, 1989. I thought you'd all enjoy it.

                WINTER SOLSTICE

Once again we have made the descent into darkness;
not even shadows to show us where we have been
or where we are going.
We are enveloped in a darkness we can't even name.

Like the Astrologers of old we search the heavens for a sign;
a sign of hope to light up the darkness of our night.

Could a new star shine for us also?
Do we dare believe in a spiritual rebirth?

Light bursting forth and growing in the darkness of our world.
An ancient hope is renewed again.
