John,
I really like Ayn Rand, even though she was a terrible writer.  Her only
problem was that she used a logic that had big enough holes for an armored
division to get through.  Her former assistant, Nathaniel Branden is much
better at stating his case.
My personal feeling is that if people want to be helpful to others that is
all well and good.  I do it myself in my weaker moments.  But when one is
forced to, then that is tyranny.  The objection is not to the action.  It is
to the compulsion.
