Daniel,
The question of the Colonel's behavior towards his family has always been
something of a puzzle, as John Algeo agreed with me when we talked about it
at last summers summer school.  While the raw facts are basically as you
state them, in the 19th century such activity was not considered, shall we
say, moral.
Considering the level of preaching that the Colonel was capable of, the
charge of hypocrisy may at least be warranted.
